Centriair Debuts in Italy with Groundbreaking Odour Removal Rate

6 November 2025

In the heart of Puglia’s olive country, Centriair has taken a major step into the Italian market with the installation of its 1st air treatment system at BelAgri’s biomethane and fertilizer facility in Candela. The challenge was as clear as the southern skies — to keep odours under control in a plant running close to the local community outdoors and under the region’s scorching summer heat. The suggested biofilter  would require constant maintenance and because of that would fail to meet the strict odour emission limits of 300 OU/m3 at the outlet, leading to constant unrest among nearby residents.

To change that story, Centriair introduced its UV-based Photolytic Oxidation technology — a solution well-established across Europe but almost unheard of in Italy before 2024. After a pilot test treating emissions from 5 storage tanks, the results spoke for themselves: over 99% odour reduction, steady performance, and zero disruption to production. This breakthrough convinced the local authorities to change odour treatment technology in the permit and approve the ColdOx customized solution as a permanent replacement for the biofilter, paving the way for a new standard of odour abatement in the Italian biogas sector.

Now fully operational, the compact system — combining an ammonia scrubber, UV reactor, dual-bed activated carbon filter and a fan— has been running smoothly with no odour complaints since installation in July 2025. Its low-maintenance design requires the first service only after 18 months, a rare advantage in demanding industrial environments. The Candela project not only marks Centriair’s successful debut in Italy but also stands as a symbol of innovation meeting tradition — turning the by-products of olive oil production into clean, sustainable energy with minimal environmental footprint and producing extra quality fertilizers for local farmers.

Word from the Client

Thanks to thorough technical analysis, precise design, and the use of UV-based systems, we achieved an odour reduction close to 100%, in full compliance with current environmental regulations. Today, the plant operates more efficiently, more reliably, and with minimal environmental impact — a result that confirms the competence and dependability of the Centriair

Centriairs early development was covered in article and youtube lecture

This week, Exportcenter Väst posted an article covering Centriairs early development and export. The article describes that even if Centriair is based in Scandinavia, the true growth for the company is in the international market. Great Britain and Germany became the first steps into Europe and now Spain, Portugal and North America are prospering markets.

How Is Industrial Odour Measured?

Odour is a significant challenge in sectors such as waste management, food processing, biogas production, slaughterhouses, rendering plants, and wastewater treatment. These industries generate strong and persistent odours. If not properly managed, these odours can affect employees, nearby communities, and the overall perception of the industry,
